I was driving my grandpa's '13 535i x-drive, and the x-drive is a very important detail, because it has hydraulic steering. Being a recent BMW, it also has turns off the engine when you stop. I was turning left on a divided highway, in the turn lane, and I stopped in the turnoff, then went to turn the wheels. The engine had shut down, and with it the steering did too. I had to let off the brake to restart the engine so I COULD TURN THE DAMN WHEEL, there was no sensor on the wheel! Thankfully BMW kindly provides a defeat button, which will be the first thing I press when I drive that car again.

I guess that's one advantage of electric steering then

In this application I would agree. Damn fuel economy standards.

You stop and then turn your wheels? Why? I was always taught not to do this, as it's supposedly bad for the tires.

My opinion on the start/stop function- NO, WHY DOES IT EXIST.

Fuel economy can bite my Audi's shiny metal ass.

I think in the Prius, turning the wheel will automatically start the engine again.

I do turn before I stop, but just "touching up" my turn. I wasn't taught that.

I guess the Prius does something better then a BMW.

You should be fine with an occasional adjustment, but dry steering overall is not great for tires.

I was taught not to do it in Driver's Ed because if you get rear ended it will send you into opposing traffic.

The teaching was accompanied by a suitably horrifying story about a previous graduate of said driver's ed course who was killed when his car was launched into an intersection then struck repeatedly by other cars.

Perhaps this is BMW's subtle way of getting you to buy a RWD model instead...

I would have bought a RWD model with a stick, but this is Wisconsin and my Grandpa is 81

I know that, my grandpa though doesn't want to screw around with that unfortunately

Aren't you going to get pushed into opposing traffic regardless when rear-ended at an intersection?

At any rate, I turn the wheels when my motion starts again. Gas on, turn wheel. No gas, no wheel.

CO2. It's crucial to sales in many countries in the EU.

My M235i has start and stop but the engine fires back up as soon as I turn the steering wheel. So this was resolved with the change away from hydraulic steering.

Honda and Acura disable the electric steering unless the engine is running and it's unreal how difficult they are to steer with no assist

I figured it would.. I would still use the defeat button, I don't like the engine cutting out at stops

Oh I know, the '12 CR-V is very difficult to manually steer.

Not if your wheels are facing straight

Kinja'd!!! Axial > Rico
10/27/2014 at 04:17

Kinja'd!!!1

But it's an intersection; traffic is moving on two axes. Go straight, get hit by perpendicular. Go side-ways, get hit by oncoming.

You're right but this tip is generally used for when there is no true turning lane and instead your just hanging out in the middle waiting oncoming to stop to turn left, you doing want to get rear ended into on coming.

Now if you're just at a red and someone rear ends you into oncoming perpendicular traffic well you're probably dead. Unless you're the type to use your parking brake at a read light which is not commonly taught.
